“Is this all becoming clear to you?” he asks. “I do hope so. There is an explanation to the dysfunction that has now become normal. An answer to why tragedy is so easily turned into humor and why self-mockery is more appealing than self-identity. If it is too difficult for you to grasp now, do not fret. The truth will be revealed to you before the end." "Do you know who you are?" This is the pressing question at the root of Cotton’s tales. I am all for books that keep it very REAL and very CLEAR. This book is a refreshing, eye opening, epiphany leading the reader by the last page to IMMEDIATELY contemplate one's purpose and mission in this lifetime. African Americans have lost a huge chunk of our ancestry through the MIStelling of history. With that being said, this profound tale leads the reader on a journey of Black America discovering the very parts of ourselves that prevent us from forward movement into the phenomenal beings we were created to be. From blood spilled beginnings, to generational curses, to self mockery, we learn that the answer to solving these situations and more is a solution that has often been overlooked. That the answer to solving Black America’s most pressing issues lies in the most often overlooked place: the hearts of our very selves. If you want to read literature that will emotionally as well as intellectually stimulate, provoke, and even entertain you, then look no further. This book is a classic that will be on shelves and talked about in the trades for years and years to come. Catch it!

Cotton K Yvonne Drew 9780615952819 Books Reviews
Wish I had this book to read as a teenager. It allows a real-world view of reality through the lens of various characters in the telling of their stories. Dealing with complex themes and issues, but easy to read and understand, it's a thought provoking read from a break-away first time author. I highly recommend it to anyone who's in search of a good narrative without the fairytales.
I loved "Cotton"! It was a modern day satire of the social ills that affect the black community today like "Hollywood Shuffle" was to the 80s. The levity helps to address heavy issues such as the use of the N-word and the disproportionate number of single parent households and its effect on future generations. Cotton is written as a mystical journey of enlightenment that is a joy to read and even more pleasure when discussed with others. It's a lighthearted way to get people talking in the community to address real problems.
It starts off a little slow; but once you start rolling it becomes an interesting insight into a young woman's viewpoint of the culture that she was born into and how she tries to make sense out of that which she cannot change. I particularly enjoyed the vignettes interspersed throughout the story as they helped with the overall flow. All in all a good effort by a young author; and I'm looking forward to her next project.
Reading this book was so visual for my students and they were captivated by the different personalities throughout the book. They could relate to many of the characters and were motivated to change some things in their personal lives as a result of "seeing" the perception of their own circles of influence. I believe that young people, particularly teenagers, will benefit from reading Cotton and allowing themselves to see things that may mpact them from many other perspectives. It resonated with them in so many ways. I used it as a conversation piece for my student club (at school) as well as a backdrop to teach life skills for a group of students. The many benefits of having open dialogue compelled each of them to look within themselves to create a better image of their communities going forward. Though one chapter in particular was tough to read (very graphic) I would highly recommend it for all communities who want to be enlightened, for it can be used it to reflect, raise awareness, gain knowledge about historical facts in the black community, and to debate some of the same scenarios that still play out in today's society. It not only poses problems but to the keen reader, it also poses solutions to help move communities (and those who might be "caught up") forward.
